About

Tom Trenney is blessed to be in his eleventh season as Minister of Music to First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he shepherds three adult choirs, accompanies the congregation on the Lied organ, preaches sermons, and serves as Artistic Director of the Abendmusik Concert Series.

Since 2016, First-Plymouth’s choirs have been honored to perform at state, regional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Tom’s professional chamber choir, sounding light, performed at the 2017 national ACDA convention. His choral compositions have been published by Augsburg Fortress, Beckenhorst Press, E.C. Schirmer/Galaxy, Morningstar, Pavane, and G. Schirmer.

In Fall 2018, Tom served as visiting conductor of the Wartburg Choir at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. In Spring 2019, Tom served as visiting conductor at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska. During the 2019-20 season, Tom was Visiting Conductor of Choirs at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music, Tom was awarded First Prize and the Audience Prize in the AGO’s National Competition in Organ Improvisation in 2006, later serving on the jury for the 2016 competition. He has performed for AGO National Conventions in 1994, 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2018.

Tom is grateful for the inspiration of his teachers and mentors – especially Anton Armstrong, David Davidson, David Higgs, Craig Hella Johnson, (Mister) Fred Rogers, William Weinert, Anne Wilson, and Todd Wilson. He is most grateful to be a son, husband, and foster parent.
