About

In a 50-year-plus career, John Brock, Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee, has pursued many interests related to the organ, including performing, teaching, research, writing, recording, and organ consulting. His performances have taken him to many parts of the U. S. and Western Europe. He is the author of Introduction to Organ Playing in 17th and 18th Century Style and co-editor of 101 Chorale Preludes: German Organ Works of the 17th and 18th Centuries, both published by Wayne Leupold Editions. Brock has recorded a wide range of organ repertoire on compact discs, including two volumes of A Tennessee Organ Tour and the complete organ works of Hugo Distler.

Brock received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Organ Performance and Church Music from the University of Alabama, where he was a student of Warren Hutton. Since his retirement, John has continued to perform, teach, and write. He has been an Adjunct Instructor of Organ at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN, since 2009, and continues to serve churches as a guest organist.

He has been active in the American Guild of Organists on local and national levels, and in 2007 was honored by the Knoxville AGO Chapter with the creation of the Brock Organ Education Fund to award scholarships to promising high school and college organ students.
